  • A great view of the remains of the crater of Mt. Waialeale. This is the wettest spot on the face of the Earth, collecting over 400 inches of rain annually. It was very unusual to be able to see and fly directly into the crater.
  • Heading back to Lihue.

Polihale Beach, Wow! Over 14 miles long with beaches several hundred yards wide. It was a journey to get here, and an even more interesting one to get back (as you will see shortly), but well worth the effort. This couple is certainly enjoying their solitude at this natural wonder.
  • Polihale Beach looking to the West with Niihau Island in the background.
  • Polihale Beach looking North with the Na Pali Coast cliffs looming.
  • Not very crowded, unlike our East Coast beaches!

  • NOT! Adventuresome Bill just had to join the others on the beach. We got stuck within 25 feet! Oh the wailing and knashing of teeth that followed.
  • Five hours and $625 later we were towed the 25 feet. In the end, though, it turned out that the rental car company admitted the 4WD was NOT working on the Trail Blazer. Bill will never hear the end of this story!

  • More glorious sunrise.
  • The "fisheye" view of sunrise.
  • Today we went on the Na Pali Coast sunset cruise that was originally scheduled for Tuesday; but for getting stuck in the sand!
  • The views are again simply spectacular on this rugged coast.
  • The lava cliffs from the ocean side are breathtaking.
  • The sea caves are so inviting. Note the light blue color of the water in these shallow areas.
  • Kalalau Valley is as picturesque from the ocean as it is from the lookouts high above.
  • More Kalalau Valley cliffs.
